Arlington West in Santa Barbara

by Kathy French, published in Literature of War: At Home and Abroad.

Sunday morning
light glides
beneath hem of fog
brightens water
polishes hull and mast.
Mourning begins again
at Arlington West.
I watch
beached crosses rise,
seemingly endless, white.
Grieved by few, the war’s dead
are as grains of sand stretching
beyond the boundaries
of my country.
