homecoming

I am a settler of ancient ground
washed in the earth
baptized in her raging waters
fallow fields and fall
the flavor of autumn and another year
sweep over me

my trance walk
takes me to the lake’s edge

I see a colorful festival
of leaves falling through jagged blue sky
I hear the rhythm of water
autumn wind produces whitecaps
clouds float by

swaying reeds in the winds of fall
bow to nothing in particular
except mortality
we all lay down on ancient ground
